How to Find the Perfect RV Mattress

How to Find the Perfect RV Mattress

Whether you’re at home or in your home away from home, a good night’s sleep is essential to your health and wellbeing. The quality and comfort of your mattress can make or break your ability to catch some zzz’s in your RV. Let’s take a look at some of the biggest issues that people face with their RV mattresses and some simple solutions in our latest blog.

With more and more RV’ers being full-time residents, a good night’s sleep is more important than ever. We’re not talking about one or two nights of “roughing it” and forsaking comfort for adventure. This is your everyday sleep cycle. So if you’re waking up with extra kinks and knots and feeling less than rested, it’s time to start shopping around for a new RV mattress. You would think that it would be as simple as hopping into your tow vehicle and heading to your local big box furniture store or liquidation center … but it’s not!

RV Mattress Size Matters

When it comes to RV mattresses, RV manufacturers have given us a challenge with their non-standard sizes. The majority of beds in RVs and trailer trailers differ in size from their residential sticks and bricks counterparts. For instance, a standard queen mattress is 60” x 80” while an RV short queen mattress is the same width but a bit shorter at 60” x 75”. Likewise, a king mattress is 76” x 80” whereas an RV king mattress is a little narrower at 72” x 80”. We all know that space is at a premium in the RV, especially in sleeping quarters, so no one wants an extra 4-5” of mattress hanging off the base! Add in options like RV three-quarter mattresses, RV bunk mattresses, and RV twin mattresses and it’s enough to make you need a nap!

RV mattresses also sometimes have curved edges or other custom shapes to help them fit into tight spaces. And in some rigs, mattresses have to be thin and flexible enough to bend when the bedroom slide-out comes in. Weight is also a concern, as mattresses can be quite heavy. Add 3+ mattresses and/or bunks and you will start to approach your maximum payload quickly!

If the little ones are complaining that their sleep is less than stellar, you may want to consider the Teddy Bear Bunk Mat by Lippert Components. Designed to give kids a fun sleeping experience in the RV, it’s just like sleeping with your favorite stuffed animal. The Teddy Bear Bunk Mat is available in a variety of sizes to fit all bunk spaces, and height profiles range from 2.5 to 4 inches.

Non-standard RV mattress and RV bunk mat sizes, and sometimes shapes, also mean that standard sheet sets and bedding just won’t cut it! It’s already hard enough to maneuver around the RV bedroom without worrying about extra inches of bulky sheets to tuck and fold. RV Part Shop has a great selection of RV sheet sets in RV mattress sizes as well as adjustable RV sheet sets with drawstrings to fit even the oddest of shapes and sizes! We also have a wide assortment of comfy RV pillows for every sleep style and preference.

RV Mattress Toppers

If fully replacing your RV mattress is out of your current budget, an RV mattress topper can add an extra layer of comfort without breaking the bank. Remember, mattress toppers provide extra support and a substantial amount of extra cushion to your mattress. Mattress pads tend to serve mainly as an allergy protector or moisture barrier, with a slight layer of cushion.

Some folks are happy with an “egg crate” style foam topper from the nearest big box store but these don’t breathe well and tend to hold a lot of heat. Foam toppers also “off-gas”, meaning that they give off a plastic-like synthetic odor. If you suffer from hot flashes or night sweats, you will want to look for a memory foam with a heat-dissipating option to reduce your discomfort.

Other RV mattress topper options to consider include wool, cotton and natural latex. Available in multiple sizes and two color options, Teddy Bear Bunk Mattress Covers easily zip onto your existing RV bunk mattress, providing a plush, inviting sleep surface perfect for lounging and sleeping.

Since everything in the RV tends to become multi-purpose, you may also want to consider an RV mattress cover or protector for those times when the bed becomes another piece of furniture for dining, play, and work. RV mattress covers or protectors will help keep out dirt, dust and debris which will help prolong the life of your investment and your mattress.
