RV Awnings, Screen Porches and More

RV Awnings, Screen Porches and More

Awnings are a simple and practical way to add space to your RV.  Depending on the style, RV awnings can also provide shelter from the elements, provide storage space, create an outdoor kitchen or help protect you from pesky insects. Let’s take a look at the different styles and types of RV awnings, as well as everything you need to know to keep them maintained, repaired and in tip-top shape.

Fixed Awnings

Fixed RV awnings are permanently installed above your rig’s doors and windows, providing continual protection against the sun and rain. While they do remain permanently in place, the main disadvantages are that they can fall off while you are driving and they also do not offer much flexibility when adjusting positions.

Slide Out Awnings

Slide-out awnings are versatile, allowing RV’ers to choose between sun and shade. Slide-out awnings are stored on or under the RV roof and can be rolled, pulled, or cranked out when shade or protection from the elements is needed.

Generally made out of the canvas, slide-out awnings are easy to care for but can be susceptible to mould and mildew. The best way to avoid mould and mildew is to avoid storing the awning while wet, which is not always possible. Commerical mould and mildew products, as well as stain removers, should be used as soon as issues surface to help eliminate and prevent damage.

Replacement fabrics are readily available and relatively inexpensive, making slide-out awnings a very popular choice for most travel trailers.

Automatic Awnings

Automatic RV awnings are the ultimate in convenience, opening at the simple touch of a button. Some automatic RV awnings even come equipped with sensors, to retract your awning when the wind picks up to prevent it from being damaged. Some automatic awnings can even be controlled via Bluetooth! While automatic RV awnings are easy to use, they can be expensive to install and even more pricey to repair.

Patio Awnings

Also known as sheltered awnings, RV screen rooms, screen porches, or add-a-roomspatio RV awnings create extra space for your travel trailer. Patio awnings are versatile and can be used for everything from extra storage, an outdoor kitchen, extra sleeping quarters or just added protection from the elements.

With walls, a roof, and a doorway for entry/exit, you’ll enjoy extra privacy and protection but, if your patio awning doesn’t have windows, you may struggle with poor ventilation. The additional components and parts make RV patio awnings more complicated to set up and takedown, so they are preferred by seasonal campers or those at least who plan to stay put for a few days.

Another excellent advantage of an RV screen porch is that it will help protect you from pesky insects. Depending on the season and your location, this can be a HUGE bonus.

RV Awning Accessories

Not only do RV awnings add space, but they also add an additional reason to decorate with RV awning accessories! Outdoor rugs really tie the space together, adding a sense of home and protecting from the wet, cold ground. Patio and awning lights come in all shapes, sizes, and power sources to add fun and functionality to your outdoor space. Whether you want fun themed lights, LED rope lights, or simple solar strings, you’ll find something for everyone to enjoy.
