Chains and Cables
Towing Chains and Cables
Safety cables are heavy-duty cables, and safety chains are durable metal links. As required by law, you will always need towing chains and cables when towing an RV. In case the coupler pops off the ball on the RV step bumper for whatever reason, it is still connected to the towing vehicle through the safety chains or cables until you can remedy the problem when you stop.
The purpose of these chains and cables is to support and catch the load of the trailer in the event that it gets unattached from the tow vehicle. When crossing the chains or cables below the RV coupler and using hooks to attach them to the tow vehicle, they become a safety net in an emergency as they catch the dislodged tongue.
Keep in mind that safety cables are not designed to carry a fallen recreational vehicle at great distances. However, they can prevent the vehicle from spinning off into oncoming traffic and crashing to the ground. This gives you enough time to pull over safely and find out why the load gets disconnected.
The towing chains and cables are designed to hold a specific amount of weight. Therefore, the cables should have a capacity that exceeds the gross trailer weight (GTW). When setting up your safety cables or chains, consider the type of hook you will use to attach them. You can use the slip hooks, quick links that close shut, or the S-hooks, which are a common option.
RV Part Shop has a variety of chains and safety cables available for use:

The Chain-Up Ball Mount from Equalizer/Fastway provides an easy method for dragging safety chains. When not in use, it lifts the chains off the ground and places them securely on top of the trailer tongue. Chain-Up is a one-time installation. It eliminates the risk of your chains dragging down.

Does My Trailer Need A Breakaway Cable?
Almost all states require that trailers weighing more than 3,000 pounds be equipped with an Electric Breakaway Kit safety system. There are two purposes for the breakaway cable. One end of the cable is attached to the trailer's brake and the other end is to a suitable location on the towing vehicle.
The breakaway cable will apply the trailer brake if a trailer comes unhitched while the vehicle and trailer are in motion. The trailer will separate completely from the towing vehicle just before the cable snaps, reducing the risk of a runaway trailer on a public highway.
UK law requires that all trailers with brakes, over 750kg GVW and up to 3,500kg GVW, and built on or after October 1, 1982, are fitted with a safety device in case the towing vehicle and trailer separate. Compliance with this law is ensured by using a breakaway cable.
Towing Chains
The majority of tow chains are made of alloy or steel links and come in various lengths and sizes. As the load increases, the chain size needs to increase as well. Towing purposes generally require a chain of at least 20 feet in length.
The strongest chain for towing is grade 100. G30 chain is the weakest chain used in light industrial and agricultural applications. The Grade 100 chain is the strongest. For the best performance, choose chains that have the capacity to carry heavy loads. The higher the chain grade, the stronger it is.
How Do I Choose A Towing Rope?
Our experts recommend that you choose a rope with a strength 2 to 2.5 times that of the thing you are pulling. In other words, if you have a piece of equipment that weighs 40,000 lbs, our 1-1/2" rope would be a good choice since it has a breaking strength of 90,000 lbs.
There are times when cars can break down out of nowhere, or become stuck in the sand, mud, or snow. Towing ropes are essential car accessories for when your vehicle becomes stuck or disabled.
Tow Rope For Sales
You should not exceed 4.5 meters on your tow rope if you don't want to get into trouble. While the rope can be as short as you like, you need to make sure that it is long enough to allow the car in tow to stop and react.
Safety Cable
In areas where a bolt could loosen due to vibration, a safety wire is necessary. Properly used, it will allow the wire to remain taut and prevent movement. Safety wiring comes in two basic forms. There is a single-wire method and a double-twist method.
A safety chain or cable is designed to protect you in case your trailer is accidentally uncoupled. It also keeps your tow vehicle tethered to the trailer, allowing you to safely stop the trailer and your tow vehicle together.
How Do Truck Winches Work?
Ropes, such as wire ropes, are twisted to create a lot of tension using winches. Through the winch motor's gear train, the motor drives a rapid rotation of the winch drum, causing the rope or cable to spin rapidly. In a nutshell, that's how winches work.
How Much Does A Truck Winch Cost?
Winch prices vary from just under $300 to over $1,000, depending upon how much weight you intend to winch and whether you choose synthetic rope or steel cable. Hydraulic winches tend to be more expensive than electric ones.
